On Making Space to Play: Ceramic Artist Abril Robbins
As we reflect on our Spring Season, we’re touching base with a few of our vendors. Today, we’re chatting with Abril Robbins of Freewheelin' Goods about prioritizing play and joy in making ceramic goods.

ABOUT ABRIL ROBBINS AND FREEWHEELIN’ GOODS
Hola! My name is Abril and I am a Mexican-American artist creating ceramic goods in Austin, Texas.
What are you hoping to nurture through your work in 2022?
I am hoping to keep nurturing my creativity and my business by creating work that brings me joy and the hope of bringing joy to others.
Who are your biggest inspirations in Texas?
One of my biggest inspirations in Texas is Brene Brown, she is an author, research professor, lecturer and podcast host. Her lectures on courage and vulnerability have provided me with a deep outlook as a person and as an artist. Another inspiration would be musical trio Khruangbin, their music is considered psychedelic rock, but they take influences from different genres. I enjoy their mysterious presence, the flow of their music and collaboration they have with other artists. My love for music is equally important to making art and this band has a way of getting my creative juices flowing.
What does creative collaboration mean to you?
It means working with others to share knowledge and experience so that we may see things from a different point of view and support each other through the journey.
How do you make space in your life to creatively recharge? Any tips or routines?
Creating space to recharge is very important for me since I tend to get caught up on projects or markets I have to prepare for. Some of the ways I recharge is by slowing down and going into the studio with the intention of playing with no specific outcome. I also enjoy spending time outdoors and taking little getaways to places that inspire me. For tips, I would suggest making a list of things that bring you joy. This can be a great reminder of things that you can do for yourself when you need a break.
How do you approach building community around your work?
I've met so many wonderful people doing in person markets and have had the opportunity of sharing our experiences around the enjoyment and creation of art. Also, I love supporting and buying local, Austin has an amazing group of creatives!
What's the one recommendation you'd make to someone new starting out as an independent creative or small business owner?
Having a business is a learning process and part of the journey is failing. Be patient, you got this!!
